Gutsy Performance Fails To Bring Just Rewards

Saturday the 6th December saw the old boys travel to Newark to try and do the double over the team they beat 5-3 earlier on in the season.

This time around though Newark looked an improved side, with more aggression and clearly some new signings. The old boys case wasnt helped when their keeper was carried off only 5 minutes into the game when the Newark striker caught him with a knee to the side of the head. The hosts dominated the first half, and only a few players from the old boys looked capable of matching the same aggression that the home team were showing.

Then as a harmless cross was sent in from out wide, the unlucky old boys defender could only loop the ball over the head of Josh Ward the replacement keeper to make it 1-0 to the home team. Newark piled on the pressure but couldnt make the possession count as the half finished at 1-0

HT: 1-0

After some harsh words at half time the old boys set out for the second half like a totally different team. The old boys came close with a few chances but couldnt convert any of them. Then a long searching throw-in from the opposition saw a goal-mouth scramble result in a hard-but-fair challenge, for which a penalty was harshly awarded.

Newarks penalty taker made no mistake in converting the spot-kick and made it 2-0. Newark thought they had wrapped the game up, but the old boys had other ideas. A good move involving Cam and Matt saw Cam clinically place the ball over the keepers head to make it 2-1.

The old boys continued pressing the opposition but from out of nowhere a long punt up field from the opposition keeper saw the ball bounce behind the back four and the onrushing striker easily placed the ball over the keepers head to make it 3-1.

But again the old boys refused to give up, and straight from the kick-off the old boys won a corner. Cam perfectly placed a cross into the penalty area and from out of nowhere Matt powerfully placed a diving header into the back of the net. It was 3-2 with 2 minutes left, and the ball was quickly placed back on the spot by shunt.

The old boys were eager for the equliser but with the clock running down quickly it never came and the game finished 3-2 to the hosts after a hard fought second half display from the old boys.

BOB U15s 0 Blackwell U15s 4

Saturday 4 October

The U15s looked to maintain their unbeaten start to the season with the visit of Blackwell MW U15s who we had last faced 3 seasons ago. Kicking uphill and against a very strong wind, the 1st half was always gong to be difficult and so it proved. The situation was not helped as the visitors took the lead when the referee awarded the visitors a very harsh penalty after just 3mins when the ball struck the hand of Joe Burton from close range with him being unable to do anything about it.

Following this the Old Boys settled and created 2 or 3 good chances of their own which they were unlucky not to convert. A second Blackwell goal followed mid-way through the half as BOB tried to play out from defence and were caught in possession and the Blackwell Midfielder scored wind assisted from long range. Considering the weather conditions, 0-2 would not have been a bad result at the half way point but a lack of closing down right on half time saw Blackwell score again.

HT: 0-3

Following a positive team talk the lads were sent out to use the weather conditions and put the visitors defence under pressure to reduce the deficit. However, for some reason this did not materialize and a very poor second half performance was to come. The Old Boys did not take advantage of the wind and rarely threatened to score a goal.

Blackwell did manage to increase their lead as one of their players was allowed to run half the length of the field unchallenged and this time hit a long range shot against the elements and into the top corner.

F.T: 0-4

Referees MOM was Matt Hardy.

Saturday 20th September

Chad Knockout Cup Round 1
BOB JFC U15s 1 Clipstone YC Colts U15s 11

This was always going to be a difficult fixture for the Old Boys newly promoted to Div 2 against one of the top teams in Div 1. Sent out with a game plan to try and keep a clean sheet for as long as possible, our worst fears were realised as Clipstone took the lead within the 1st few minutes. After this the lads seemed to settle and the visitors became frustrated at the lack of further goals. What looked to be a very respectable score line was then made to look bad as the visitors scored 2 goals in the last 5 mins of the half. H.T: 0-3.

After a half time team talk in which he lads were told to forget the score and concentrate on trying to play football things got worse as Clipstone scored again right after the re-start. BOB did get some reward for their efforts as a long through ball was chased by Cameron Cromarty (Cam) who finished neatly. This should have given the Old Boys some hope but a 5th goal from the visitors saw their heads go down and the majority of players literally gave in. This resulted in the floodgates opening and saw Clipstone score 6 more goals in quick succession. This gave them a deserved if somewhat flattering winning margin, especially after a good 1st half by the Old Boys.

Referees MOM watch Cameron Cromarty. F.T: 1-11.

Under 15s In Comeback To Collect Points

By Sean Hardy

BOB U15s 5 Newark Town Blues 3 Sat 13th September.

Saturday saw the U15s season get underway with their first competitive game under the Old Boys name and ended with a well deserved but hard fought victory.

The first half was fairly evenly contested and saw the visitors score first with a good move down the right finished off at close range. BOB forced their way back on level terms when Shunt pulled the ball back from the by-line and Robbie Littler hit it low into the bottom corner and then went in front after an attempted cross by Jake Rawson deceived the keeper and ended up in the net. BOB were in control leading up to the break but then a combination of defensive mistakes followed by a great long range strike saw the visitors take the lead just seconds before the break (HT 2-3).

In the second half BOB came out strongly but for 20 mins were unable to find a way through the organized Newark defence. However, the pressure did pay off eventually as Cameron Cromarty finished off the best move of the game and then claimed his second goal as both he and the visitors defender challenged for a ball played into the box. BOB were quite comfortable at this point and as Newark pushed forward to try and get back in the game, Robbie also scored his second with a great hit into the top corner to make the points safe. Referees MOM was Cameron Cromarty (FT 5-3)

Woodhouse Colt Summer Tournament

Sunday 20th July - By Sean Hardy

Sunday 20 July saw the U15s take 2 teams to compete in the Woodhouse Colts summer 6-a-side tournament. Due to holidays and other commitments we were a bit thin on the ground having on 13 players available and in turn meaning 1 team was without a substitute.

The A team which on paper looked slightly the stronger struggled to adapt to the different strategy of 6-a-side football and finished 4th from a group of 6, but missing out of the semi-final place only due to result of the final group game. The A team were not helped as they were carrying 2 injuries but had only the bare 6 players.

The B team fared better as the qualified from their group in 2nd place scoring many goals including 4 from Tom Cessford who usually plays in defence at 11-a-side. They lost their semi-final to the eventual winners and then were defeated 2-1 on the 3rd place play-off, a game in which we looked extremely tired.

Overall a good day and pleasing that the weather was OK unlike the recent Brimwood Tournament.

Bolsover Old Boys JFC U15 0 Handley Wood U15 8

Thursday 17th July - By Sean Hardy

This game saw the final 1 of 3 recent friendlies against higher level teams and proved to be the toughest of all. From start to finish the BOB U15s were totally outplayed with Handley Wood dominating the possession. The Old Boys did manage to keep the score at 0-0 for around 25 mins due to some resolute defending and a good save by John Lancaster who turned a penalty onto the post with his foot.

However, once the first goal went in the lads heads dropped allowing Handley Wood to score twice more before the interval. After the break the visitors scored 2 more quick goals and at that point it looked as though they could go on to get double figures. BOB did manage to steady the ship a little after that but Handley Wood managed 3 more goals before the end to leave the final score at 0-8.

Bolsover Old Boys U15 3 Brampton Rovers U15 7

Thursday 10th July

By Sean Hardy

The game began promisingly with the Old Boys taking the lead with almost the first attack of the game. A ball into the box was not cleared and Declan Jordan hit the ball into the roof of the net with his left foot. Brampton were level within 5 mins after a shot was blocked but their striker was able to side foot the ball into an empty net from a tight angle. The scoring continued and after a good move Cameron Cromarty was on hand to put the BOB back in front with a good finish. Soon after, further Brampton pressure led to them drawing level at 2-2. The 1st half scoring was not finished as a long clearance upfield caught out the Brampton centre half and his mis-timed header bounced over his own keeper for an unfortunate own goal. There was still time for Brampton to score again leaving the half time score at 3-3. Brampton certainly played the better football and the Old Boys were probably lucky to be level at half time.

The second half saw Sam Ward change sides to play in goal for the visitors and his presence at the back was badly missed. The Old Boys completely fell apart in the second half and hardly put 2 passes together. Without Sam the whole defence was in total disarray, although he did have to make a couple of good saves and Shunt had a good chance to score but mis-hit his shot. The half was very one sided with some very poor defending and the only surprise was that Brampton only scored 4 goals from the many chances they created.

Following a couple of good results this gave the Old Boys a reality check that we still have a lot of work to do, and one or 2 of the players really need to look at their level of performance and effort. If nothing else we should be able to learn from this game the importance of working as a team, keeping the ball and making simple passes.

BOB JFC U15s 2 Spire Rangers U15s 1

Saturday 5th July

By Sean Hardy

Saturdays friendly saw BOB JFC U15s entertain Spire Rangers U15s at Hillstown. The visitors started much the better team and for the first 30 mins BOB were given a lesson in keeping possession and playing simple football without creating too many clear chances, although John Lancaster was forced to make an excellent save in the 1st minute. As the half wore on BOB started to get to grips with the opposition and saw a bit more of the ball but the 2 chances that were created saw Shunt fire wide and Cam head just over.

The second half saw the U15s get much tighter to the Spire Rangers midfield and start to put more pressure onto their back 4. Ten minutes after the re-start saw BOB break down the right and with the visitors failing with a couple of attempts to clear the ball Jordy Widdowson smashed the ball into the net. 5 mins later Jordy robbed the opposition captain on the half way line to feed Shunt who had made no mistake with his finish to double the lead.

Spire Ranges did manage to pull a goal back with an excellent long range strike by their full back, but a solid performance by the Old Boys defence led by Sam Ward saw us hold on. A good win and a pleasing performance from everyone which we also need to try and learn something from.

Next up is a Friendly this Thursday evening (10th July) v Brampton Rovers, KO 6.30pm at Hillstown, please feel free to come along and support the lads.
